If you are lucky enough to have apple trees or a free supply of apple to make homemade hard cider with, then you are going to need a cider press. You can buy a cider press or make your own.
You can easily make your own cider press out of wood and a jack.
You can get a free PDF file of these plans by clicking here Free Cider Press Plans
This doesn’t have to be much for looks but it must be strong. Suit it for the jack you’ll use and aim for a rig that can put about 150 pounds on each square inch on the press rack.
Pictured is an old style bumper jack from a car. The only alteration was a 3/16” hole drilled in the lift arm for a small screw, run up through it into the frame cross member. This prevents the jack from kicking out and hitting you. Screen-door springs were installed to raise the jack when the handle is wiggled.
Oak or maple should be used for the cross members and pressing table. Long carriage bolts or threaded rods will beef up the structure to resist your pressures.
You can be creative and use a scissor jack, hydraulic jack or old fashion bumper jack .
This is a video of a small cider press very similar to the plans that I posted:
This will probably need some really good hardwood such as Oak because it is going to have a lot of pressure and it needs to be strong.
Also you will need to make sure that it is untreated wood, so that you don’t get any nasty chemicals in your cider.
You will have to make a plate that you stack the cloth wrapped ground apples in when you put them into the cider press.
